New on Spark: Permitted Use Tables for Energy ✨
Hello Spark User!
One of Spark’s most frequently requested features is to display permitted uses based on an AHJ’s zoning ordinance.
Is solar permitted by right, or does it require a conditional or special use permit? In which districts are solar and batteries permitted?
Today, the typical process looks like:
Identify the AHJ of a parcel via manual research or GIS search
Find the zoning ordinance for the AHJ
Go through hundreds of pages of a zoning code PDF or municode/ecode/amlegal website to see all mentions of “solar” or “storage”
Cross-reference the zoning ordinance with the districts of the given parcel to determine if solar is permissible

In our latest release, we streamlined this process by providing the “use table” for all definitions of solar in an AHJ. Instantly see the districts permitting solar and storage projects, so you don’t have to worry about going after prohibited areas or rezoning.

Instead of manually reading the zoning ordinance and looking for districts that allow solar, Spark generates a Use Table for you instantly.
Recently, we helped one customer screen 100+ parcels based on permitted use, to rule out sites that are in prohibited districts. We helped them expedite a task that would take several weeks and many team members to just a few days.
Try out permitted uses in Butte, CA, Maricopa, AZ, Perry, IL. Let us know what you think!
